Trekking for the Royal Marsden Hospital – Nepal next!

In 2010 The Royal Marsden Hospital helped me get through cancer that had appeared in my chest, which upon diagnosis I had been given a 10-40% chance of survival. Following the latest check-up scan results, which were as good as they possibly could be I’ve just signed up to fundraising for the hospital by trekking [...]

ORACLE Cancer Trust Christmas Concert

This was my third year at the above event, first two years as the photographer and this year as one of the ex-Royal Marsden patients who volunteered to give a reading. Considering it’s the fantastic medical folk from the head & neck unit at the Royal Marsden (consultants, doctors, nurses, radiographers….and so on) to whom [...]

Event photography

This is an area that has been growing over the past few months, but they come in very different shapes and forms, although to my mind needing a mixture of an overal views, section shots and close-ups to reflect the mood of the event as well as the individuals involved. Here are some of the [...]

Television interview, Zimbabwe and next trip

With the media coverage of throat cancer resulting from Michael Douglas’ diagnosis and November’s ‘Oral Cancer Awareness’ programme I was fortunate enough to be invited onto ITV’s ‘This Morning’ to talk about my experiences of going through cancer, and my subsequent book, ‘Bangers & Mash’. Having never been on television before it was quite an experience, but [...]

Michael Douglas, throat cancer and me!

Yesterday, following Michael Douglas’ diagnosis of throat cancer, there was a full page feature on my experience with the disease in the Daily Mail – http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1309665/Like-Michael-Douglas-I-drank-smoked–I-dreamt-Id-throat-cancer.html . Not being exactly used to being featured in the national press, I was more than a little surprised with what followed in the way of interest. Early yesterday morning [...]

When the consultant calls……

It’s three days ago that I went in for my final post-treatment scan and was resigned to the fact that with my consultant being away on a course I would have to wait until the appointment next Thursday evening to find out the results. Knowing that the results would have been back at the [...]

Treatment results imminent….

Having now passed the requisite six weeks since the end of my radiotherapy I have now booked the all-important PET scan, which will take place on Tuesday. So come Tuesday mid-morning I will be radioactive and under instructions not to go close to pregnant women or young children. The slightly irritating aspect is my consultant [...]

Final scan approaching……

I spoke to the consultant’s  PA from The Royal Marsden this week, and was informed that the time has come to arrange the all-important final post-treatment check-up scan. Once the consultant has signed it off then it’s just a wait for the imaging centre to summon me in for a PET/CT scan, so fill me [...]

Treatment finishes … now the wait.

At the meeting with my consultant last week his opening comment was ‘Keith you look horribly healthy for someone who is going through what you are, and especially at the stage you are at’… keep it coming! I explained that I was now being hit by the side-affects and eating was extremely painful – he [...]

Radiotherapy

I have completed 14 of my 20 radiotherapy sessions, and these shots gives an idea of what’s involved .  In 2007 when the cancer was in my throat the way they ensured I was in exactly the same positon for each ‘zapping’ session was easy – I had a head mask made that was then screwed down to the [...]
